About the event

Join the Yellohwouse artist in residence Karen Thảo La for a workshop with youth 7+

In this two-hour interactive workshop, you will use personal images, found materials, and a variety of mark-making techniques, such as drawing, painting, and stitching, to collage together your own colourful two-dimensional artworks.

These artworks will serve as snapshots of what matters most to you in the present, preserving where you are and your passions and interests for your future selves and others to find and cherish as archives.

Please bring a photo or found materials that are meaningful to you, but make sure they are things you're okay with playing with. For example, you may cut out a portion of the photo or paint over a section—it could be anything from a picture of your beloved pet to a leaf found next to your favourite tree.

With your photo or found materials as a starting point, we'll embark on a shared journey of creative exploration.

This workshop is inspired by celebrated Cree artist George Littlechild, as depicted in the feature documentary nanekawâsis.

This event is being held on the unceded, shared traditional territories of Penelakut, Lamalcha, Hwitslum and other Hul’qumi’num and SENĆOŦEN speaking peoples, Coast Salish Peoples of Galiano, as well as the ceded territories of Tsawwassen First Nation, on what is now known as Galiano Island. We are grateful for the generousity of CRD Arts & Culture and BC Arts Council.
